Epidemiologists warn Wellington protest could help Omicron spread

Professor Michael Baker said the ongoing protest, which had seen hundreds of people sharing tents and cooking facilities, posed a public health risk.

 

One positive was the protest's location, Wellington, which was famously well ventilated.

 

Baker said people who were wearing masks, had booster vaccinations and walking among the protest would face far less risk of infection than those who were unmasked, crowded in, and in tents at the protest.

 

They also said New Zealand's high vaccination rate meant many people could have Covid-19, but only minor symptoms which they may not recognise as an issue.

 

It said both cases had recently visited the Queenstown area and were currently isolating at their respective homes.

 

Davina Sully "scaled mountains" to see her younger sister before her death, but in the end, she missed it by six hours.
