One of the tennis world's leading doubles players has scoffed at the decision to grant Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic a medical exemption for Melbourne tournament.

The top-ranked Djokovic wrote on Instagram on Tuesday that he had received "an exemption permission" to travel to Australia, which has strict Covid-19 vaccination requirements in place for the tournament.

Channel 7 sports reporter Ryan Daniels said on social media: "Reckon they've misread the room on the Novak decision" while Australian women's football writer Samantha Lewis tweeted that the decision was "obscene" and "everybody attending the Australian Open has a patriotic duty to boo Djokovic for the entirety of his stay".

The Victoria state government has mandated that all players, staff and fans attending the Australian Open must be fully vaccinated unless there is a genuine reason why an exemption should be granted.
